Pumped storage success for Voith in China

Voith Hydro has supplied two full power units (5 and 6) for the Changlongshan pumped storage plant in eastern China.

Earlier this month, unit 5 efficiently handed a 15-day trial operation and was officially put into commercial operation. It is the world’s first reversible pumped storage unit with a rated speed of 600 r/min and a capability of 350 MW. There are six units put in in total on the 2.1 GW Changlongshan station positioned in Zhejiang Province.
Voith says that the efficiency of unit 5 received excellent feedback from the owners and consultants in the trade.
“The data confirmed that the unit meets our excellence criteria and thereby proves that the engineering, manufacturing, set up and commissioning of the world’s first 600 r/min with 350 MW unit was profitable,” said Zhang Chengping, mechanical and electrical chief engineer at plant operator the China Three Gorges Group (CTG).
